Honest claims in five minutes

Nothing here is a summary written after the fact. These are the problem, mechanism, and move of each article, in the reading order, joined by its own connective lines. Any one of them opens into the full argument.

Start with the sentence you are about to publish, and the question that decides whether it is a promise or a piece of machinery you will regret describing.

Guarantees, not shapes

Problem
A disclosure that describes how a system is built reads to its recipient as a description of what the system promises, and the recipient builds accordingly.
Mechanism
Observability rather than the written contract sets the boundary of dependence, so anything a counterparty can see becomes load-bearing the moment somebody builds on it, whatever the document said.
Move
Ask of every sentence before publishing it whether the reader would have to change their own work if the fact stopped being true, and publish only the sentences that pass.

Publishing the right sentence is only half of it, because a rule nothing enforces can be written in exactly the same confident voice as a rule that is.

Candor about enforcement

Problem
A rule enforced by a gate and a rule enforced by nothing can be written in the same confident voice, and most disclosure documents write them that way.
Mechanism
A stated constraint is read downstream as an enforced one unless the statement says otherwise, so the enforcement tier is part of the claim and omitting it is not neutrality but overclaim.
Move
Label every principle with the enforcement it actually has, keep a register of the ones nothing checks, and say requested out loud where requested is the truth.

Once you are honest about what holds, the next question is where it stops, and whether that boundary gets drawn by you or found by somebody else.

What your claim excludes

Problem
A protection claim with no stated edge invites the reader to extend it as far as the words will stretch, and the words always stretch further than the engineering does.
Mechanism
An exclusion published by the claimant bounds what a reader is entitled to infer, and an exclusion discovered by the reader retroactively converts every unbounded claim beside it into something that looks deliberate.
Move
Write the list of things your product may not be called, hand it to the people whose job is to make it sound good, and publish the boundary in your own documentation rather than waiting for someone else's.

Exclusions turn out to do more than keep a claim honest: what a maker refuses is the only legible statement of what it believes.

The exclusions are the taste

Problem
Every company states values and every good quarter confirms them, so stated values carry no information, and buyers who need to know what a maker actually believes have nothing checkable to read.
Mechanism
An aspiration is confirmed by anything and falsified by nothing, while a refusal is falsifiable in every transaction it governs, so the exclusions are the one place where values become claims that can be audited.
Move
Read a maker by what it refuses, publish your own refusals as commitments rather than aspirations, and treat what a recommender declines to include as the substance of its recommendation.

A boundary you have written down and set in six-point grey has been disclosed and not communicated, which turns the whole problem into a design problem.

Limits are content

Problem
Most systems that record their limits honestly still render them at the edge of the artifact, where the disclosure is technically present and functionally absent.
Mechanism
A limit given its own slot in the template must be filled or leave a visible hole, which converts the honesty of a disclosure from a property of the author into a property of the form.
Move
Allocate the limits a designed position in the artifact and a check that fails when the position is empty, so a document cannot read as complete while the part that bounds it is missing.

End with the claim that cannot be softened later or added afterward, because it was decided the day the system was built.

Which way failure falls

Problem
Fail closed and fail open are argued as opposed doctrines, so a team that adopts either one wholesale gets a system that either leaks under partial failure or abandons a person mid-sentence.
Mechanism
The two doctrines are one rule read on different axes, because failure has a direction, and an honest system spends its degradation on authority while spending none of it on presence.
Move
Put strictness at authoring time, where a builder can still fix what is wrong, and grace at the moment of contact, where a person is standing in front of the thing.
