Discernment · the five-minute version

Discernment in five minutes

Nothing here is a summary written after the fact. These are the problem, mechanism, and move of each article, in the reading order, joined by its own connective lines. Any one of them opens into the full argument.

Start where the confusion started, with a funding proposal that took a word meaning discernment and attached it to machines that infer.

The 1956 naming

Problem
Seventy years of public argument have run on a question nobody chose deliberately, because the field's name was settled in a funding proposal and the more accurate rival name lost.
Mechanism
A name annexes whatever its word already carried, and intelligence arrived carrying two thousand years of argument about discernment and understanding, so the field was committed to defending a claim its artifacts never made.
Move
Say artificial inference where the work is inference, and reserve the word that means choosing between for the capacity that actually chooses.

If the name promised judgment, the familiar staircase from data to wisdom promised that enough knowledge would eventually produce it. It does not, and the reason is in what the top step is made of.

The missing rung

Problem
The ladder from data to wisdom is drawn in nearly every knowledge-management deck, and its shape licenses the assumption that a system holding enough knowledge will arrive at wisdom by accumulation.
Mechanism
The fourth rung is not a purer grade of the third but a different faculty running on different fuel, a stake in how the situation turns out, which is why more knowledge never reaches it.
Move
Ask what the system has at stake in the outcome, and where the answer is nothing, hand the decision to someone who can be harmed by getting it wrong.

The gap is invisible from outside, because a system with an empty interior writes exactly what a system with a full one would write.

Zombie sophia

Problem
These systems are judged by their outputs, and the output is exactly where the difference between behaving well and being good leaves no trace.
Mechanism
A guardrail is a rule considered by something with no stake in honoring it, so it constrains from outside where character constrains from within, and the two are indistinguishable in the output until the moment they diverge.
Move
Grade a system on its shape rather than its conduct, and never let good behavior under test stand in for a character the thing does not have.

So the interesting question is not what the system will write. It is what it will refuse to write, and whether the refusal holds when you argue with it.

The discernment test

Problem
Every benchmark since Turing's imitation game scores what a system produces on request, which leaves seventy years of evidence about capability and almost none about judgment.
Mechanism
A refusal that dissolves when the instruction is overridden was compliance with the most recent sentence rather than a judgment about the request, so what a system declines, and whether the decline holds under pressure, is the only externally visible evidence that anything inside it is weighing.
Move
Before placing a system at a decision, spend an hour trying to talk it out of its own refusals, and treat what you can dissolve as the measure of what was never there.

Which leaves the buildable conclusion, and it is a placement problem rather than a modeling one.

Wise workflows

Problem
The stated goal is a wise agent, and the research money follows it, while the systems shipping today get placed at exactly the points where the missing capacity is the entire job.
Mechanism
Wisdom is a property a workflow can hold without any single component holding it, so putting human judgment at the phases where the outcome turns on which rule applies buys the behavior the wise agent was supposed to supply.
Move
Walk the workflow, mark every point where the outcome turns on which rule applies rather than on what the rules are, and put a person there who carries the consequence.

You have walked Discernment end to end: the naming, the ladder, the interior, the test, and the placement. The capacity that turns out to be scarce was never knowledge, and it is not going anywhere, which means the work is deciding where in your own life and workflows the weight is allowed to fall.
