Artifacts in five minutes

Nothing here is a summary written after the fact. These are the problem, mechanism, and move of each article, in the reading order, joined by its own connective lines. Any one of them opens into the full argument.

Before anything can be built, the wrong question has to be set down, and it has been the wrong question for three centuries.

The Vaucansonian trap

Problem
Three centuries after a gilded duck performed digestion it could not do, debates about machine intelligence keep re-asking the spectators' question, is it faking, and the question decides nothing a builder can act on.
Mechanism
Faking is a claim about origin and holding is a claim about output; a synthetic diamond is not a fake diamond but a real diamond with a different origin, and outputs can be tested where origins can only be argued.
Move
Test the stone. Route every argument about what the machine really is into a check of whether the specific output holds.

With the duck question retired, the word itself can be rebuilt from its roots, and the rebuilt definition carries the whole program.

A made thing whose job is judgment

Problem
The field's name was a conference branding decision that outcompeted a more accurate one, and the confusion it seeded, artificial as fake rather than as made, still runs the public argument.
Mechanism
Artificial and artifact are the same word, ars plus facere, a thing made by skill, and intelligence descends from inter-legere, to choose between; assembled honestly, an artificial intelligence is a made thing whose job is judgment.
Move
Use the definition as an engineering spec: build and evaluate these systems as artifacts responsible for judgment, with the duties artifacts carry, provenance, testing, and a maker who answers.

The rebuilt definition says what the thing is; the next question is what it is made of, because the material carries obligations of its own.

The reliquary of logic

Problem
The largest artifact ever constructed is made of other people's crystallized intent, and it was assembled the way a gravel plant handles stone, in an age whose predecessors commanded their finest work for containers of consequential fragments.
Mechanism
Care owed to an artifact scales with what it is made of rather than what it does, a principle the law already concedes for human-derived holdings, so building carelessly with crystallized human intent is desecration rather than bad engineering.
Move
Build like a reliquary keeper rather than an aggregate plant: admit nothing unnamed, handle the material as what it is, and ask of every structure what it is made of and what that makes its maker owe.

A vessel of crystallized intent produces judgments; the next move is what turns those outputs into something that can bear weight.

The fixity requirement

Problem
The largest artifact ever constructed re-derives its answers on every asking, so nothing it says can be cited, audited, or built upon with confidence.
Mechanism
A fixed artifact does not hallucinate because it is no longer generating; fixity converts an output into an object that can carry provenance, be tested, and bear weight.
Move
Fire generated knowledge into fixed, attributed artifacts and build on those, reserving generation for the kiln where knowledge is still being shaped.

Fixed things can carry names, and names are the first requirement of any structure strangers must trust.

Signed stones

Problem
The largest assembly of human intellectual work ever constructed is made of unsigned stones, so nobody can be credited, paid, or held accountable for what bears load.
Mechanism
On the largest collective builds in history, the mark on the stone served payment and accountability at once, and a structure keeps both functions only while every piece carries its maker's name.
Move
Accept no stone without a signature. The Linux kernel has run the demonstration for three decades at the scale of tens of thousands of hands.

Signed stones settle who built what; a living structure also keeps the arguments that lost.

Preserved dissent

Problem
Aggregation flattens: when many contributions are compressed into one answer, the losing views vanish, and with them the structure's ability to reopen a question it once closed wrongly.
Mechanism
The Talmud preserves rejected opinions with their reasoning, recorded partly because a future court might need to rely on them; dissent kept in the record is the mechanism by which a collective structure revises itself.
Move
Record the losing view with its rationale wherever knowledge is assembled, because the cost of carrying dissent is storage and the cost of losing it is the ability to change your mind.

Provenance and dissent make an archive worth keeping; only a rehearsed withdrawal proves it was kept.

The seed vault withdrawal

Problem
Knowledge structures are praised for what they store, but storage claims are cheap; the only test that counts is whether what was kept can be brought back when the original is destroyed.
Mechanism
Svalbard's first withdrawal came when war reached the Aleppo seed bank; the deposits returned, were regrown, and were redeposited, closing the loop that turns an archive from a promise into a proven system.
Move
Design every knowledge archive for the withdrawal, and rehearse it, because an archive that has never restored anything is a hope with a doorway.

Kiln, brick, cathedral

Problem
Tacit knowledge dies with its holders, conversations evaporate, and aggregations flatten what they absorb; each loss happens at a different stage, so no single tool prevents them all.
Mechanism
The three stages have different physics: the kiln is living dialogue where variance is exploration, the brick is the fired artifact where fixity buys provenance and testability, the cathedral is assembly where signatures, dissent, and governance carry strangers' weight.
Move
Name the stage before choosing the tool, because kiln methods applied at cathedral scale produce rubble, and cathedral rules applied in the kiln produce silence.
